Samsung NaviBot SR8980 Review

Overall this is a great little robot. It has helped us reduce our requirement to vacuum from sometime once a day to once a week. Very Nice Bot!

Cleaning: For a device that simply drives across the carpet in a logical path it does a very good job. We now use our Dyson once a week for that deep clean and edges that the Navibot doesn’t do.

Cleaning rating: 3

Navigation: Navigation is logical and covers the floor quite well though if seems to be optimised for square rooms and layouts. This doesn’t cause any problems in out house until it runs in to something and gets our of alignment with the room. It also has a problem with the island bench in our kitchen and sometimes misses the space on one side of it. I think the use of a 360 degree laser scanner would resolve this issue.

Navigation rating: 4

Maintenance: Maintenance is easy especially seeing that it does most of it itself. When docked it empties the on board bin and in the process attempts to clean the brush. We found that all we have to do is clean the brush and under body with our Dyson once a week and this keeps it operating smoothly.

Maintenance rating: 4

Value for money: These things can always be better value for money but I don’t think this is ridiculously priced. My main reason to purchase it was to help my wife who has hurt her back and it has achieved the results we set out to obtain by getting it.

Value rating: good value

What would you change: Samsung should consider using a less dust attracting plastic for the body. A stronger suction and better edging would be nice. Better room mapping with the use of a IR laser on top of the unit would be a big benefit to the unit. Ability to program from a computer via the Internet would be great seeing how cheap Wifi chips are these days.

Unfortunately the robot doesn’t perform much better when it gets hungry: it makes repeated attempts to find and dock with the base station but nine times out of ten ends up either turning round in circles or crashing into and over the lead-in ramp. Both scenarios leave scuff marks on the carpet.

Easy to set up out of the box but that’s about it. This is not a fire and forget Vacuum, it needs constant attention it gets stuck easily, misses large parts of our lounge area, repeatedly cleans the same spot. The battery lasts less than an hour. It hasn’t once made it back to base with out getting lost or stuck (on one occasion it actually got stuck trying to vacuum it’s own base!!). The areas it does manage to clean it cleans well.

We have a fair sized 4×2 with wooden floors and a couple of rugs.

After 4 months of using the Navibot, I must say I am still as happy as I was since I first got it. Still beats manual vacuuming. Sure it gets stuck here and there but I am quite sure it is one of the better robot vacuum units around. Self emptying really helps. The extended warranty purchase gives me ease of mind. No regrets.

I really tried for weeks. Created ramps between transitions, cleaned up the floors, stuffed up all tight places for it not to get caught. Not a single time during 30+ runs, did it return to charging station, if all possible reasons for getting stuck were eliminated it started giving “I’m stuck” error in the middle of the hardwood floor.

It’s great. You do have to watch it a little that it doesn’t get caught under something or hook onto a power cord, but geez, it’s pretty awesome. We have kids and so our floors are never completely clear, but I figure it has to work it out because they’re always going to be that way. I’m careful with tiny toys or bits of lego etc, but the larger toys it will just bump into, push around for a bit and then move on.

Apart from light mats, it goes around most things, if you do a quick look around b4 setting it off. Good experience with out of warranty service too. You still need a vacuum for corners so it’s an extra, but certainly keeps down the dust and dog hair.
    i would buy again

Great Vacuum, but, you have to have everything off the floor, i feel these vacuums are good if you have not much furniture, i would never go out and leave as it gets stuck on some of my furniture. if your floor not square it doesn’t do all of it if it has to go around stuff it will usually miss parts of your floor and it cant always find its way back to port…it also can have trouble getting back on the port and will get stuck.

    Worth every cent!!

We have a large 4 bedroom home with jarrah floors in all the entertaining areas and carpet in the bedrooms, the SR8980 has exceeded our expectations. My husband was dubious at first, but it goes from timber floor onto our rugs with ease, it navigates around the home and returns to the docking station the empty itself and to charge. We both work full time and with two kids this has saved us some valuable time. We leave the chairs up in the dinning room and it cleans under the table.
