IKEA Home Planner Review

Basic features

Using a proprietary add-on from IKEA, users can quickly install the plugins necessary to begin designing the perfect floor plan for your kitchen and dining room. The designer itself is quite limited in comparison to others, but the functionality of the system is easy to manage.

Key features

With a limited selection of items, you can place available appliances and objects around your room in order to build a floor plan of your kitchen or dinning room. Although there are few items available in the system, you can add generic items to the planner in order to get an idea of what you would like to see. While the items are limited, they can be altered in size so that you can have an exact measurement of what you currently have.

The three dimensional rendering aspect of the IKEA Home Planner works very well and can immediately present you with a detailed look from within the room. Using the controls on the panel, you can “look” around the room and get a sense of what it would be like with your current developments. Placing items in the room works in the 3D view and allows you the same control and measurement alterations as the 2D view would.

As this is a new development by IKEA, it may be only a matter of time before additions are put into the Home Planner. However, it currently sits as a very limited method of deigning a home as a whole and lacks many additions that most homes utilize. It feels more like a marketing tool than an actual planner, especially with the added pricing capabilities that are in the system.

Platforms and synchronization

The IKEA Home Planner is a web-based application that utilizes it’s own plugin for rendering and usage. Windows XP SP2 or newer and MAC OS X 10.6 or better is needed to run the application. Supported browsers consist of:

  • Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher
  • Firefox 3.5.7 or higher
  • Google Chrome 13.0 beta or better
  • Safari 5.0.3 or higher
  • Screenshots

    Compared to similar apps

The interface is well developed for IKEA, but lacks any real application for developing a floor plan for an entire home. Objects are unavailable and the kitchen and dining room areas are the only aspects currently available. While the 3D rendering aspect of the application is near flawless, the inability to really create using items other than what’s in IKEA’s catalog is what hinders the app. Alternative applications available on the Internet are far more sophisticated in terms of practical development of a floor plan.

    Pricing and license

IKEA’s Home Planer is a free to use app as is the creation of an account with the system in order to save your designs.

    Bottom Line

The interface for the IKEA Home Planner is well developed and easy to use. If not for the fact that the object placement is limited to only two room styles without practical additions, this application would be amazing. Switching from 2D to 3D is effortless and the renderings are smooth. However, there are far better applications on the Internet if you’re not looking to shop for your kitchen or dining room needs at IKEA. As this is a new application, it would be nice to see continued updates to the software in order to become a real floor planner and not just a digital method to hawk IKEA’s limited selection of available wares.
